Helpful information for recreational prospectors. If you have any questions or are interested in leasing the right to prospect all of my claims for a season, just give me a call at: 509-389-2606 - I love to talk about gold mining - it is my passion and favorite activity.
I wish you great success and lots of fun gold prospecting is in the heart of the historically rich Cedar Creek Mining District.
Once you have caught "gold fever" it is incurable. It becomes a life long hobby and passion.
Fresh air, magnificent scenery, adventure, wildlife, good friends and fun, it is all part of the miner's life.
In over 25 years of prospecting I have had some awesome adventures, found gold and made strong friendships.
Here is a list of some of the basic equipment you will want to gather up to have with you.
Chain saw & Axe
Heavy chain or metal cable - (may want to pull a tree off the road or move a rock.) with hooks
so you can attach it to your vehicle.
No 2 Shovel
Small Shovel
Hand Trowel
Gold Pan & Sucker bottle
Water proof gloves (the thinsulate ones used for ice fishing are great)
5-gallon buckets - with lids. - (You can never have too many - buy at the hardware or if you know a restaurant, they will most likely give them to you.}
Tarp or shelter tent
Rain suit
Hip wadders - and lots of dry socks - The creek is cold, even in the summer, so if you buy the poly-propelene liners and heavy wool socks you will stay comfy.
Plastic milk crates - You can put a rock in them in the creek and they make a great cold refrigerator and they are most useful to carry gear, etc. You will also wish to have a small portable sluice to test and a large one to run bank materials. You will most likely need other supplies including a high banker, dredge and metal detector.
It is also wise to be prepared for any emergency - there is lots of wildlife on the claims, moose, elk, deer, bear, cougars and wolves. Most of the guys carry a gun - I could not hit the broad side of a barn, so I carry bear spray in a chest holster - I have seen all the animals above frequently on the claim, but have never been threatened. However, if you have small children it is best to keep them close to you and be sure to set up your camp in a way not to attract animals.
